This rich dua encapsulates the essence of seeking guidance from Allah concisely yet profoundly. When we beseech Allah for guidance, we are essentially seeking knowledge of truth and the capability to adhere to it. Guidance serves as the cornerstone for success, not only in this worldly life but also in the hereafter. Through divine guidance, we formulate goals that align with the pleasure of Allah, paving the way towards Paradise. However, the attainment of these goals necessitates our steadfastness on the straight path without deviation. This steadfastness encourages us, fueling our determination to stay on the path of righteousness.
Imām Al-Nawawī mentioned that the sadād of the arrow is aiming it straight. Thus, when we implore Allah for “Sadad,” we are entreating Him to bless us with success by keeping us upright and unwavering in all our endeavours. This dua encompasses a deep longing for Allah’s guidance and a sincere commitment to walking the path of righteousness.
Imam Muslim narrates that Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said to ʿAlī: Say, “O Allah, guide me and keep me upright. When you mention guidance, visualize the straight path, and when you consider sadād, think of aiming an arrow straight at its target.
O Allah, Guide me and keep me upright.
In the hadith above, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provides profound guidance to Ali ibn Abi Talib on the importance of mindful visualization in supplication (dua) and meditation. This narration beautifully illustrates the Prophet’s method of teaching his companions not only what to say but also how to engage their minds and hearts in the process of invoking Allah. This guidance enlightens us, inspiring us to deepen our connection with Allah through mindful supplication.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed Ali to say, “O Allah, guide me and keep me upright.” This dua encompasses a profound request for spiritual guidance and steadfastness on the straight path. However, the Prophet did not stop at mere verbalization; he emphasized the importance of visualization to enhance mindfulness during supplication.
Visualizing the straight path while invoking guidance encourages the believer to focus their thoughts and intentions on seeking Allah’s guidance and remaining steadfast in righteousness. This imagery helps to align the heart and mind with the desired outcome, fostering a deeper connection with Allah and reinforcing the sincerity of the supplication.
Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged Ali to visualize “aiming an arrow straight at its target” when considering the concept of “sadad” (aiming straight). This visualization adds a layer of intentionality and precision to the supplication process. By envisioning the act of aiming straight, believers are reminded to direct their desires, actions, and intentions towards Allah’s pleasure with clarity and purpose because in being kept upright is in making sure all one does is for Allah's worship and pleasure alone.

This hadith teaches us the importance of engaging our senses and imagination in worship and supplication. Mindful visualization allows believers to immerse themselves fully in the spiritual experience, enhancing concentration, sincerity, and connection with Allah. It serves as a powerful tool for maintaining mindfulness and focus during dua, preventing distractions and ensuring that the heart remains steadfast in its devotion.
Expanding upon this principle, mindful visualization can be applied to various aspects of our lives beyond supplication. Whether in prayer, decision-making, or pursuing our goals, visualizing the desired outcome with sincerity and clarity can help us stay focused, motivated, and aligned with our values. Just as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) guided Ali in visualizing the straight path and aiming straight, we can harness the power of mindful visualization to navigate life’s challenges with faith, purpose, and steadfastness.
